Pre-requisite skills

Equipment requirements

To become a certified Canadian Energy Advisor, you must have your own equipment, including ...

  • Your own vehicle
  • Blower door equipment
  • Laptop computer (1GHz or higher) with a portable colour printer
  • A digital camera
  • Sheet-feed scanner
  • High-speed internet connection
  • Portable ladder
  • Misc additional tools. A complete list will be provided to qualified candidates

Each independent advisor is required to have their own HST and business number and to provide each client with a receipt showing full payment received and service provided. Liability insurance coverage of minimum $2,000,000.00 is required and proof of such must be provided to Home NRG Savers Inc before certification will be processed with NRCan. For those with existing E&O insurance a letter from your provider that stats you are covered for performing energy evaluations is adequate.

Advisor Training

To become an energy advisor, you must attend a 5 day energy advisor workshop in the Durham Region that covers all of the job functions of an energy advisor. During the workshop you will you perform a minimum of two house evaluations as a group in the presence of a recognized instructor.

You will then be required to perform a minimum of seven certification house evaluations during a probationary period which will be assessed and quality assured by the instructor. The final two of these evaluations will be supervised by the instructor. The instructor will either recommend that you write the online exam (Must get 75% minimum to pass, if not then a re-write cannot be done for 90 days) or that you complete additional evaluations under supervision until your performance meets the requirement standards.
The training will give you the basic skills and knowledge required to be an energy advisor. The field evaluations will provide you with supervised practice in performing all the tests and evaluation procedures before completing evaluations independently.

Advisor certification

You’ll become officially certified as an ecoENERGY Advisor once you have successfully completed your seven assessments and passed a two-hour online examination administered by Natural Resources Canada. By signing a contract, home energy advisors agree to be bound by the terms and conditions of Home NRG Savers Inc’s agreement with Natural Resources Canada. Advisors who fail to follow these terms and conditions will be de-certified.

Code of Ethics

Your energy audit work is governed by strict Code of Ethics guidelines developed by Natural Resources Canada..

  • As an Energy Advisor, you are an energy audit professional who offers unbiased advice during home energy audits. Your energy audit duties must be exercised with integrity, fairness, and impartiality and shall not be influenced by conflicting interests.
  • Advisors must recommend customers receive more than one bid before selecting a contractor.
  • Under no condition may an Advisor accept, or offer, a commission for retrofit services and materials.
